CALA is an innovative mixed use development in Somerville, MA. Conceived by architect Sebastian Mariscal, CALA reinvents an out-of-use Brutalist-style school building as a vibrant canvas for urban living, including apartments, retail, and public spaces. The old school’s structure was pared back to allow the building’s bones to show, and large expanses of concrete were replaced with floor to ceiling glass opening to expansive patios and green space. The spaces flow inward to a multi-level courtyard and outward to a public park where artists’ murals enliven the walls and community events draw residents and the surrounding neighborhood to experience a unique blend of Community, Architecture, Landscape, and Art.
